Twisted Kingdom

by Rina Kent

Elsa’s world is yet again tipped upside down when pieces of her past come back to haunt her. Not knowing who to trust, she must revisit where it all started in order to learn the truth once and for all. Aiden must win back Elsa in a world that threatens to tear them apart at every turn, and he has to change who he is in order to do it. In Aiden and Elsas final chapter, relationships are tested and all is revealed in this shocking conclusion.

Twisted Kingdom

So this is my second favorite book in this trilogy apart from the first one. If you have read my other two reviews of the previous books you would know that I have a big soft spot for Aiden and Elsas story, and I think this book explains that perfectly. Twisted Kingdom is a lot more plot heavy than the other two, which honestly is a welcomed change from the normal Rina Kent books. In her large universe, most of the story is 80% smut with a little background plot that doesnt make much sense, but in this one she actually focuses on the individual character development and plot twists. Rina Kent has never been an author with great writing so you have to lower your expectations a lot, but if you can look past that it is an enjoyable read.

After Elsa finds that her father is alive and well, she is thrown into her past head on, and without Aiden by her side. I honestly really liked seeing more from Elsa without Aiden or any of the other main side characters, it made her seem more human and was a nice change of pace. Watching her slowly remember pieces of her past was like a puzzle piece that the reader could put together along the way. The plot twists were interesting, and even though some of them were pretty predictable it was still entertaining. We got to see more of why Aiden is the way that he is, and what really happened the night of the Birmingham fire.

Elsa’s mom is genuinely a creepy character which I was pleasantly surprised about. The problem was her Dad, he had literally no personality. Like he had just woken up from a coma and hadnt seen his daughter in 11 years but he had barely any emotional reaction to seeing her again. We are told that he cares about her but not shown at all.

It was cool to find out that Knox was Elsas step brother, it was one plot twist I didnt see coming. He seems like an interesting character and I know that he has his own book later in the universe so I may read that. Teal, Elsas step sister, is also introduced in this book. I will just have to say, she was so goddamn cringy and I hated every page she was in. Like come on, the cringy quotes on all of her shirts? The moody teenage bullshit? Girl, we are too old for this. And she was just so so mean to everyone, especially Elsa, who didnt do shit. Like it's not “quirky” it's cringy and bitchy.

The smut was a bit underwhelming in this book compared to the last two, but still pretty good. I think it's because the tension between the two of them is not the same as it was, so it makes it seem a bit more repetitive. Plus, they had pretty much run through all the super smutty acts already so it didn't hit like it used to. Trust me though it will still have you giggling and kicking your feet. They have a lot more emotional sex in this one which was honestly kind of a nice change of pace.

The whole thing with Aiden and Silvers engagement was just so stupid to me. I understand that Rina needed to have some type of conflict happen between Elsa and Aiden so that the tension between them was still there, but I think there could have been a million better ways to do it. Silver is such an annoyingly drawn out character. Aiden using her to make Elsa jealous was understandable in the first book, but after he blatantly told Elsa many times that that was exactly what he was trying to do it really lost steam. Like STOP jumping to fucking conclusion, maybe hear him out for a second, and think fucking logically?? I swear the fact that she thought for even a second that they were actually getting married is insane and was so infuriating.

Elsa is still treating Kim like shit, even though she is the best friend she has and is like the only voice of reason. Kim even told Elsa straight up that she should logically just talk to Aiden, but she completely ignores the advice. Also Elsa  just completely ignores her, even after getting shipped off to Birmingham. I mean Kim was very obviously going through something serious but Elsa was so absorbed in herself that she couldn't care less.

I actually really liked the ending of this book, which i dont think many people would agree with but still. It had a good mix of smut and plot development that wrapped up everything into a nice little bow. It didn't have a lot of actual suspense, and the reason for their predicament was so stupid, but I am not going to spoil it. Despite that, I liked how things ended up, and everything was explained nicely in the end.
