Deviant King book review

Deviant King

Rina Kent

As Elsa starts her new school at Royal Elite academy, she is hopeful of a fresh start. But when the most feared and worshiped boy in school vows to destroy her, her dreams are crushed. Aiden King is a black hearted demon, and his sights are set on her. Suddenly, her dark past is not the only thing haunting her dreams. Filled with lust and deception, Elsa doesn't know if she will make it out alive.

Once again, Rina Kents series has absolutely taken over my life and I have no idea why. I swear, the books are just flat out addicting. After reading all 34 books in the

series (yes you read that right, 34) I can confidently say that this is my favorite book for many reasons. If you want to read all 34 you can check out my blog post "Rina Kent Reading Order" to find out.

Rina has a great habit of pumping out the same books over and over again, with the same dark characters and innocent protagonist, but every one is still addicting to say the least. Being the second book in the series, her writing is still fresh and captivating and does not suffer from repetition like the later books do.

The smut is great, the characters intriguing, the underlying plot actually exists, and the plot twist is actually interesting. This is definitely not to say that the writing is good in any way, because it is not. It honestly reads more like a fan fiction than anything else, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. Her books have always been a great choice if you just want to read some good spicy smut with not much of a plot.

Aiden King is just as dark and twisted as you want him to be, with absolute possessiveness and drive to get what he wants. And what he wants is Elsa, no matter what the cost. Something that I like in particular about this one is that it doesn't exactly suffer from the “I am obsessed with you for no actual reason” trope, which I always think is really annoying. It might seem like that at first but once you get to the end and read the plot twist, stuff starts to click. This is one of her trilogies so their relationship definitely progresses as it goes. Aiden is not a good person in any sense, but is that really what you want out of a smutty quick read?

Elsa is one of the least annoying female protagonists in Rina Kents books, which isn't really saying anything but still. She does get unnecessarily angry at some points, but it is understandable considering Aidans character. I think she behaves like any “normal” person would when confronted with Aidens BS. The absolute worst thing about her was how she treated her best friend, Kim. Like, they are supposed to be best friends, but she hides everything from her, even after swearing that she wouldn't do that. Kim is obviously going through some series crap the whole book but Elsa was so self obsessed with her own problems that she doesn't bother to care. Elsa also definitely has some “i'm not like other girls" energy though which can get pretty annoying at some points.

Basically, if you are thinking about reading any Rina Kent trilogy, read this one. I have read the other two books and I am not going to spoil anything, but the actual plot gets pretty interesting as the series progresses. It was one of the few trilogies from her that I actually was on my toes and guessing what was going on. Even though the writing is pretty laughable, if you are in the mood for a quick spicy read, this is probably for you. I read it in one day and this is the third time rereading it soooo.
