Throne of Glass Reading Order

Updated: Apr 2

This is the reading order for the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Mass. The series order itself is straightforward, except for when it comes to Assassin's Blade, a novella that Mass wrote after the series was completed.

Assassin's Blade is written as a prequel to Throne of Glass, and shows Celeana before she went into the glass castle and her time training to be an assassin with Arobynn Hamel. You can honestly read it at any point because it is not directly connected to the main story, only supplements it, and has no spoilers.

However, everyone debates when you should read it because it has characters that come up later in the series that are useful to know about in order to fully understand the connections. I will show the different orders and then give my own opinion on when you should read it.

Sarah J. Mass recommends this order:

1. Throne of Glass

2. Crown of Midnight

3. Assassin's Blade

4. Heir of Fire

5. Queen of Shadows

6. Empire of Storms

7. Tower of Dawn

8. Kingdom of Ash

  • Mass recommends this order because from Heir of Fire on, you start to see references to the characters and events that are shown in Assassins Blade.

Here are some other reading orders that fans of the series recommend:

1. Assassin's Blade

2. Throne of Glass

3. Crown of Midnight

4. Heir of Fire

5. Queen of Shadows

6. Empire of Storms

7. Tower of Dawn

8. Kingdom of Ash

  • Some people think you should read it chronologically. This reading order is shown on the back of the book sleeves and is probably the most popular. My own issue with reading it like this is because most of the characters in AC don't become actually important until the end of Empire of Storms, and mostly in Kingdom of Ash. Personally, if I had read AC first I would have completely forgotten who any of those characters were by the time I hit the 6th book.

Finally, this is my personal favorite reading order and I think is decently popular:

1. Throne of Glass

2. Crown of Midnight

3. Heir of Fire

4. Queen of Shadows

5. Empire of Storms

6. Tower of Dawn

7. Kingdom of Ash

8. Assassin's Blade

  • This is how I read it and I think it was the best way to do so. I think this because most of the characters and events that are brought up in Assassin's Blade are most important to me in Kingdom of Ash. It was most impactful for me seeing Celeana grow up mentally and physically throughout the series, and then going back to the very beginning and seeing how far she had come. I also think it made the events in Kingdom of Ash come together and enhanced the impact that it had.
