Iron Flame

by Rebecca Yarros

Iron Flame book review

Overall I really liked this book, I think that it did go wrong in a lot of ways but I was hooked the whole time and read the whole thing in like two days. I think it suffered from second book syndrome which I kind of expected but it wasn't necessarily in a bad way.

First off, the main problem that I had with this book was the side characters had so many opportunities for growth and it just wasn't expanded on. I really wanted to see more of Sloan's character, she was built up so well and the potential for the dynamic between her and Violet could have been so cool but she was ignored for the whole book.

I absolutely loved the dragons in this book. I loved them in the first book and I feel like they gained great personalities in the second. I loved seeing their dynamic with Violet and I think they balanced out her character very well.

I think it would have been cool to see more of Dains character and his growth with what happened when he found out the truth in the story. He was written out to be such a headstrong character and then completely did a 180 and we heard nothing about it.

The atmosphere was great and I think they built on the world a lot more in this book. I liked seeing more of her mom and the way that the siblings think about her. I spent a lot of time deep diving into the world and the battles that happened in it. Definitely spent a lot of time ranting to my friends and did not shut up about it for the week that I read it.

Brennen was completely left out. At the end of the first book it was such a big plot twist and I was so excited to see her reaction to it and get a good explanation of all of that. But that wasn't the case, and everyone just moved past it in a couple of chapters. And then he was barely brought up for the rest of the book. I really expected more than that especially considering how much she talked about him in the first book. Even when Mira and their mom found out he was alive there was never any true fall out

I think that this book really could benefit from multiple POVs, as much as I love Violet, exclusively hearing the story from her point of view narrows the potential of the world and the story. I think that if we heard from other characters like Rhi and Sawyer then it would really help expand the world.

Even though the disagreements between Xaden and Violet were realistic, I feel like it all happened way too quickly. They got back together so quickly and then after that just came up with stupid miscommunications to keep their relationship interesting. If this is going to be a 5 book series then I think they should slow it down a bit and stp with the constant smut fan service. Maybe expand the other side characters' love interests more.

In all this is a great book and I definitely recommend it. There are definitely some parts that arent the best, but if you liked the first book in the series then I think you would love this one as well.
